BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – As expected, the elections for the Berlin House of Representatives and the District Assembly are to be repeated on February 12, 2023. This was announced by state returning officer Stephan Bröchler on Wednesday after the Berlin Constitutional Court had declared the September 2021 votes invalid. The official announcement of the date will be made on Friday in the Official Journal, according to Bröchler.
From now on, the preparations already made will be intensified. The paper for the ballot papers is now officially ordered. The most important point is recruiting election workers, emphasized Bröchler. They could already apply on the homepage of the state returning officer. If possible, enough applications should be received by Christmas so that the training can start in good time, says Bröchler.
According to the Berlin Senate, the breakdowns should not be repeated when the election is repeated. At least 38,000 poll workers are to be used in the election to the House of Representatives, compared to 34,000 in 2021. They should be better trained and receive significantly higher compensation. There should also be more ballot boxes in polling stations than last time./mvk/DP/men
