LONDON (dpa-AFX) – Immediately before the last round of elections, the remaining three candidates to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson were campaigning for votes. Secretary of State Liz Truss wrote in an op-ed for the Telegraph newspaper (Wednesday) that she was the only candidate with a “truly conservative” economic plan. The 46-year-old promised “brave reforms” in housing, cutting bureaucracy and unbundling EU regulations.
Truss, a right-wing candidate in the Conservative Party, has come third in previous Tory votes. According to polls, however, she has a good chance of receiving many votes from MP Kemi Badenoch, who left on Tuesday. This means that she could overtake the previous runner-up, Secretary of State for Commerce Penny Mordaunt, in the decisive round of voting on Wednesday.
The result was expected for 5:00 p.m. (CEST). The last-placed person is eliminated. The Tory party members then decide between the remaining candidates. Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, who has always received the most votes in all ballots, is considered to be in the running for the runoff. The result is to be announced on September 5th.
The vote became necessary after Prime Minister Johnson announced his resignation two weeks ago under massive pressure from his party. The new party leader also moves into the seat of government in Downing Street./bvi/DP/ngu
