Quote: “This is a very large and significant donation. We have been in continuous contact with the Ukrainians about Caesar artillery, and I am glad that we have now received broad support from the Danish parliament to donate it to Ukraine’s struggle for freedom,” the minister said.
The Danish government has decided to donate all 19 Caesar howitzers ordered from France to Ukraine. According to Ellemann-Jensen, this decision was supported by all Foreign Policy Council members.
Ukraine’s request has put Danish politicians in a dilemma, as the artillery system is also important to Danish defence to build-up the 4,000-strong 1st Brigade, which Denmark has pledged to NATO.
The transfer will be accompanied by a training and education package for Ukrainians.
The Danish Ministry of Defence has purchased 15 artillery systems, which were delivered in 2020, with four more scheduled for delivery in 2023.
