JENA (dpa-AFX) – As part of the hospital reform he is planning, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) also wants to introduce improvements in the care of people suffering from the long-term effects of a corona infection. The reform is intended, for example, to promote the establishment of long-Covid special outpatient clinics, Lauterbach said on Friday in a video message during a Long-Covid congress in Jena. These ambulances would be needed specifically for the care of complex cases. “We don’t have the structures for that yet.”
The first specialist congress of the Long Covid Doctors’ Association started in Jena on Friday with more than 2400 participants from Germany and abroad either on site or digitally. Experts and those affected want to exchange previous findings on the diagnosis and therapy of Long Covid. Lauterbach said that in view of the large number of diseases and those affected, Long Covid is a “research emergency”. The federal government sees the need, already supports a number of research projects and wants to strengthen this.
The medical association had previously called for significantly more to be invested in research into Long Covid and the treatment of the sick. The German patient guidelines define complaints that persist for more than four weeks after the corona infection as long covid, and they last longer than twelve weeks as post covid./zei/DP/he
