Russian troops captured the territory of the “Butivka” mine, have partial success in Pisky, and are constantly conducting assaults in the districts of Kamianka and Krasnohorivka. The Ukrainian city Avdiivka combines all these names. Despite the fact that in recent weeks, the Kremlin threw all its efforts at Bakhmut and even stopped the assaults in the Siversk region due to lack of forces, at this time the aggressor attacked in the Avdiivsk direction. The Ukrainian army is just now making great efforts there to hold the defense line.
The Avdiiv direction connects settlements along the western outskirts of Donetsk. The sands are located south of Avdiivka, Kamianka and Krasnohorivka – further north. After 5 months of frontal attacks, Russian troops seem to have decided to encircle Avdiivka.
In the direction of Donetsk-Pisky, the enemy has partial success, according to the evening summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On August 1, the command reported on the repulsed assault on Pisok, on August 2 – on the unsuccessful attempt of Russian troops to storm in the direction of Avdiyivka.
Prior to this, during the five months of the large-scale invasion, it was the front line near Donetsk that did not move, as it is very fortified during 8 years of war.
“6,500 shells per village in less than a day. And it’s been six such days, and I can’t get it in my head, how in this flurry of enemy fire, at least some number of our infantry remains alive. The reserve goes to the position to close the breach with itself, and after 5 minutes only one of the 15 people remains intact,” – so describes on her page in the social network, a Ukrainian serviceman has been at positions in Pisky for the last few days Sergey Hnezdilov. According to him, Russia is conducting extremely dense artillery fire, breaking strong concrete positions. The Ukrainian military has lost some of its positions, has significant personnel losses, and is asking for help with artillery, which is sorely lacking.
“Avdiivka, Pisky – it’s just hell there. It can’t even be described in words,” said today in the evening address described the situation in the war zone in Donbas, the president Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
Some positions had to be withdrawn because there was nothing left, Radio Donbass reported. To Realiya, the head of the Avdiyiv City Military Administration Vitaly Barabash. Here are his main theses:
– In the last days the shelling in this area increased several times. Barrel and rocket artillery, as well as aviation, are used.
– The Ukrainian military withdrew from their positions at the “Butivka” mine. After all, there is nothing to hold on to: nothing has survived.
– Russian troops have some success in Pisky. Ukrainian units took people away from some positions. These positions were completely destroyed by the aggressor.
– They are also ongoing constant attempts of assault operations north of Avdiivka, in Kamianka and Krasnohorivka districts. Russian troops are also trying to storm the industrial zone of Avdiyivka. But it is very difficult for them to advance there.
– Flights to Avdiivka itself have also become more frequent. The city has been without electricity, water and gas for a long time. Despite this, about 2.5 thousand people remain there. Someone is only now daring to leave. And there are those who are already returning to the city from evacuation.
– The Russians cannot capture Avdiivka with direct attacks. So they try to advance from the flanks.
Russia’s large-scale war against Ukraine
On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine on the ground and in the air along the entire length of the common border. The territory of Belarus was used for the invasion of Kyiv region with the intention of capturing the capital. In the south, the Russian army, in particular, occupied part of the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, and in the north – the regions of Sumy region and Chernihiv region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the full-scale invasion a “special operation.” Initially, its goal was defined as “demilitarization and denazification”, later – “protection of Donbas”.
The Russian authorities say that the army does not attack civilian objects. At the same time, Russian aviation, missile forces, navy and artillery bombard Ukrainian cities every day. Residential buildings and objects of civil infrastructure throughout the territory of Ukraine are subject to destruction.
By mid-July, Ukraine estimated Russia’s losses in the war at more than 38,000 personnel. The Kremlin does not release data on those killed during the invasion, but admits that the losses are “significant”. At the end of June, President Zelensky estimated the ratio of losses of Ukraine and Russia as one to five.
Having not overcome the resistance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the surviving Russian units withdrew from the territory of Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions in early April.
After the liberation of Kyiv region from Russian troops, facts of mass murders, torture and rape of civilians, including children, were discovered in the cities of Bucha, Irpin, Gostomel and villages of the region. Ukrainian authorities have declared that Russia is committing genocide. Western countries participate in confirming the facts of mass murders. The Russian Federation rejects accusations of war crimes, and calls the killings in Buch “a stage”.
Later, the facts of torture and murder of Ukrainian citizens began to be revealed in almost all settlements that were under Russian occupation.
As of 24:00 on July 31, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was able to confirm 5,327 deaths and 7,257 injuries of civilians in Ukraine due to the full-scale war started by Russia. At the same time, the organization emphasizes that the real numbers are much higher.
