HAMBURG (dpa-AFX) – The trade union IG Metall and the wind turbine manufacturer Vestas want to start talks on Monday (3 p.m.) in Hamburg about a solution to their conflict. The union announced on Friday that it would therefore suspend the strikes at the company. The talks offer “an opportunity to put together a collective bargaining package that benefits the interests of the employees and Vestas as an employer,” explained IG Metall district manager Daniel Friedrich.
Vestas Germany Managing Director Nils de Baar said “the current economic situation is a major challenge for our entire industry and we still believe that a solution can be found without a collective agreement”. However, the strike situation has become a burden for many employees. Vestas can no longer accept that the workforce is further divided. “That’s why we decided to work with IG Metall on a solution.”
According to earlier information, 1,700 people work at Vestas Germany, 700 of them as fitters. For IG Metall, the dispute is a kind of pilot conflict in the wind power industry. The trade union has been complaining for a long time that many suppliers, such as machine builders, are traditionally subject to the collective bargaining agreement in the metal and electrical industry.
