WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – The United States has imposed sanctions on a China-based network of companies and individuals said to be helping Iran build drones. The network is responsible for the sale and delivery of thousands of components to an Iranian aircraft manufacturer, the US Treasury Department said on Thursday in Washington. The Iranian aircraft manufacturer is said to be involved in the manufacture of a certain model, which Iran also exports to Russia, according to US information. He had therefore already been subject to US sanctions at an earlier point in time.
According to the US government, Iran is directly contributing to the war in Ukraine by supplying drones to Russia. As a result of the sanctions, any assets in the US of those affected will be frozen. US citizens are prohibited from doing business with them. International business is also usually made much more difficult for those affected by the sanctions.
The USA also announced further sanctions against 39 companies from the financial sector. They formed a network of “shadow banks” that allow sanctioned Iranian companies to gain access to the international financial system and cover up deals. “Iran maintains complex sanctions-evasion networks in which foreign buyers, bureaux de change and dozens of front companies help sanctioned Iranian companies to continue trading,” Deputy Finance Minister Wally Adeyemo said
